Centre d'interprétation de la foresterie de La Sarre
In 1989, La Sarre was designated Forestry Capital of Canada. That is also the year the Centre d'interprétation de la foresterie was constructed, where many things to discover await you. The interpretation centre presents an exhibition that recounts the camp life of bush workers, a miniature replica of a wood mill, a model of regional forest, a herbarium of the flora of Abitibi, and a specimen handling section where you are welcome to manipulate various wood species and learn about the many steps in wood processing.
In addition, tour guides tell the story of timber companies of Abitibi.
Informations
Industries Norbord inc. La Sarre, division Panneaux
Built in 1980 by Normick Perron, a company run by the Perron family of La Sarre, this sawmill was the first in Quebec to manufacture waferboard out of trembling aspen. In 1989, Noranda Forest acquired the sawmill. Today, it is operated by Norbord Industries Inc. In 1995, the sawmill was revamped; it cost the company 73 million dollars to turn it into one of the world's most modern and efficient waferboard mill.
The mill manufactures OSB boards out of trembling aspen and birch. The boards are used for housing construction (walls, beams, roofs) and industrial purposes (wrapping, suitcases, furniture). It employs over 180 workers.
